The Poppy Rangers are supporting characters in We Bare Bears.

The Poppy Rangers are a group of brave, free-spirited and adventurous little girl scouts/troops and rangers, consisting of Diaz, Parker, Nguyen, Murphy and the leader, Wallace, who have a close friendship with Ranger Tabes and the bears, more especially Grizzly Bear, whom the girls adore and affectionately refer him as, "Bear Guy," even despite Grizz's incompetence and his notable flaws within his heroism. Outside of their careers as park rangers like Ranger Tabes, the Poppy Rangers are typically seen casually playing with each other and having fun, more especially by throwing tissues at each other, having pillow fights and/or flying kites.

Personality[]

The Poppy Rangers are shown to be nice, affable, selfless, harmonizing, brave, and adventurous, typically listening to their superior Ranger Tabes and Grizzly Bear within both of their commands, even if severe danger awaits from them. Furthermore, the Poppy Rangers show high loyalty, demonstrated by them working as an excellent heroic team, the other Poppy Rangers saving Wallace from Hurricane Hal and assisting the three bears into defeating Agent Trout, their arch-nemesis, and leading to the latter's deserved incarceration and restoring. The Poppy Rangers' bond with Ranger Tabes and Grizz is so pure to the point that the girls perceive them as possible "family figures," seeing Grizz as a father-like figure and Tabes as a mother-like figure to them.

The aforementioned valor and commitment between the Poppy Rangers does not last long, however, demonstrated when Wallace yells out for help and in fear when the hurricane blew her kite out of her hands and almost blew her away as well, and when the other Poppy Rangers scream in fear and embrace Grizz Bear for safety when thunder strikes, heavily implying that the Poppy Rangers have pure fear against storms, such as the Hurricane Hal. Additionally, in the episode, Lord of the Poppies, as Grizz's incompetence hits the last straw of the Poppy Rangers' patience, the Poppy Rangers eventually succumb to starvation and insanity, to the point that the girls decide to devour Grizz and turn against him, which references how Panda Bear and Ice Bear became primal animals in the episode, Primal. Not only that, the Poppy Rangers also seem to crave deeply for leadership, demonstrated when Grizz accidentally causes the Poppy Rangers to begin a "Ranger War," turning against and brutally fighting each other for the guidebook, which Wallace stole from Grizz upon kidnapping and entrapping him to cook him for food, which is due to Grizz's "shoulder angels."

Even with their kindhearted dispositions, the Poppies are still passionate enough to argue and bicker with each other from time to time, but are especially blunt towards Grizz's incompetence, with Wallace and Nguyen having the least patience towards Grizz's incompetence, the former even going as far as bragging about Grizz's incompetence with achieving the recent badges and questioning how he managed to start a fire underwater, and the Poppy Rangers were even dismissive of Grizz and his lack of skill in the annual Peewee Ranger Games. Nonetheless, the Poppies still show high loyalty and affection towards Grizz regardless of his flaws, going as far as motivating and encouraging him to defeat the Ivy Rangers, and feels remorseful of dismissing Grizz and his initial lack of skill in the annual game, more especially through cheerleading, in which Grizz reforms his incompetence because of this.

Along with the Ranger War, the Poppy Rangers are also shown to be lethal, shown when the Poppy Rangers were about to eat Grizz out of appetite before Tabes shows up with pizza, despite being initially reluctant about it, but this was due to Grizz's incompetence.

History[]

Earlier Childhood[]

Prior to the events of We Bare Bears, the Poppy Rangers' earlier childhood was purely ambiguous, but it is assumed that the girls are school students and had developed a pure friendship and bond upon their first interaction with each other, and throughout the early stages of their childhood, the Poppy Rangers were raised by their unidentified parents and the girls spent most of their early childhood hanging out and playing with each other, as well as flying kites and exploring. Diaz aspires to be a biologist when she grows up, Parker aspires to be an aeronautical engineer when she grows up, Murphy aspires to be a geologist when she grows up, Nguyen's future career is to be a principal dancer, and Wallace aspires to be a park/forest ranger, like Ranger Tabes. However, the Poppy Rangers became arch-rivals with the Ivy Rangers as the girls saw them as their bullies. Upon first meeting Dana Tabes, the five girls saw Tabes as a mother-like figure and shown high commitment towards her, and have relentlessly worked and trained hard to attain all badges possible from Ranger Tabes by succeeding several missions.

Grizz and the Poppy Rangers

Poppy Rangers with Grizz.

Years after the girls dedicated to working with Ranger Tabes to attain badges, the five girls are officialized as the Poppy Rangers. In the episode, "Poppy Rangers," the Poppies are first seen marching with Tabes, before the girls analyze and examine a grasshopper found by Tabes and prepare to explore the Howling Mountain Cave for the Poppies to attain the final Poppy Ranger badge, the Spelunking Badge. The Poppy Rangers are reluctant on exploring the cave, but after Tabes announced that a cave expert is joining the squad, the Poppies become passionate and excited. The cave expert happens to be, much to the Poppies' surprise, Grizz. After the Poppies introduce themselves to Grizz, the five Poppies start exploring the cave with Grizz and Tabes. While the Poppies spent most of the time analyzing the cave and asking questions about it to Grizz and Tabes to learn about it, the Poppies' journey through the Howling Mountain Cave was quite hectic: the five girls took legitimate entertainment and humor from Grizz being attacked by bats in the cave and while analyzing Grizz's supplies out of his backpack; Grizz's loud voice has caused the cave to temporarily collapse, prompting the Poppies to retreat for safety, although Wallace was saved by Tabes from a falling stalagmite.

Further into the Howling Mountain Cave, however, things took a darker turn: Tabes chooses the darker route of the cave, at odds with Grizz choosing the more safer route of the cave. While Tabes is passionate to explore the darker route of the cave, Grizz and the Poppies embark through it in paranoia; even Wallace sides with Grizz for being reluctant on heading further into the dark path, but after Tabes convinced her to attain the badge, she immediately changes her mind, until the Poppies, Grizz and Tabes are forced to cross the very narrow path to the way out of the cave, but eventually got themselves stranded due to Grizz and Tabes having a brief and heated argument about crossing the narrow path and deciding to go back. Ranger Tabes becomes hopeless upon the aftermath of it, but Grizz and the Poppies reassure her, prompting Tabes to toss each Poppy Ranger out of the cave to safety after witnessing the grasshopper outside of the cave, as well as getting herself and Grizz out of the cave, much to the Poppies' cheer for them. In the end, the Poppies successfully attain their final badge by Tabes, including Grizz, and move on to another adventure.

Relationships[]

Grizz Bear[]

Although this is not to show that the Poppy Rangers are not as affectionate towards the other bears, the Poppy Rangers have the closest friendship with Grizz aside from Ranger Tabes, affectionately calling him "Bear Guy," even though he is an animal. In "Poppy Rangers," the Poppy Rangers are surprised to first meet Grizz, but their first impressions of Grizz are still affectionate nonetheless outside of that. The Poppy Rangers and Grizz explore and embark through the Howling Mountain Cave with Tabes. Grizz examines the interior of the cave to Tabes and the Poppy Rangers. Nguyen asks Grizz about the bats at the ceiling at the cave, and Grizz responds that, "Those are vampire bats. You know, they eat blood and junk, so be careful, gang." Diaz is the next one to ask a question, that being, "Um, aren't those from Central and South America?" This prompts Grizz to attempt to stand up against the bats, only to be attacked by them, which leads the Poppies enthusiastically laughing at him (excluding Wallace, but still gives a humorous smile from it) and taking humor at Grizz being attacked by bats. Later in the cave, Grizz draws sketches of himself and the Poppies on the wall of ammonite fossils, and Grizz teaches the Poppies about the cave full of stalactites by saying, "That's when it gets so hot that the cave starts to melt," much to the Poppies' interest. He eventually guides the Poppies into the giant stalactite above them, and while Grizz searches for a camera in his backpack, the Poppies investigate Grizz's supplies with a mix of enthusiasm, curiosity and interest. While going through the dark route of the cave, the Poppies side with Grizz for being reluctant on going much further in the path and decide to take the safer path, which dissatisfies Tabes. In "Hurricane Hal," the Poppy Rangers offer Grizz his kite to save Wallace from being blown away from the hurricane, and the Poppies work with Grizz to pull Wallace to safety, and even before that, Nguyen was the first to alert Grizz that Wallace is outside flying her kite in the hurricane, prompting the Poppies and Grizz to get her inside to be safe. In "Ranger Games," the Poppy Rangers are motivated by Grizz's cheerleading to defeat the Ivy Rangers, and the Poppies themselves even went as far as motivating Grizz from his incompetent skill in the annual Peewee Ranger Games to defeat the Ivies.

Overall, Grizz Bear seems to be the closest to the Poppy Rangers aside from Ranger Tabes, almost seeing him as a "father" figure. The Poppies are often blunt towards him and his incompetence, especially in "Lord of the Poppies," but still show a close relationship towards him nonetheless.

Ranger Tabes[]

Upon first meeting Dana Tabes, the five girls saw Tabes as a "mother" figure and shown high commitment towards her, and have relentlessly worked and trained hard to attain all badges possible from Ranger Tabes by succeeding and accomplishing several missions relative to the badges, and often call Tabes "sir" due to the latter's strength and valor being comparable to a man. In "Poppy Rangers," the Poppy Rangers are seen marching forward with Tabes, singing their signature song, "Poppy Rangers have no fear, kind to every bird and deer!" After being stranded in the cave, the Poppies eventually motivate and reassure that Tabes is not a "terrible ranger," prompting Tabes to reform herself from her overconfidence and leading to her getting herself, the Poppies and Grizz out of the cave before it collapses. The Poppy Rangers are typically obedient to Ranger Tabes in her commands, even if it leads them into possible danger, such as analyzing a grasshopper, embarking through the Howling Mountain Cave to earn the Spelunking Badge, heading back to the Ranger Station for safety from the Hurricane Hal even though the girls are disappointed that they cannot fly their kites due to the hurricane in "Hurricane Hal," and doing all they can to attain all badges from Tabes.

Overall, Ranger Tabes is the closest to the Poppies, with the latter seeing Tabes as a "mother" figure.

Ivy Rangers[]

The Poppy Rangers vs. The Ivy Rangers.

The Ivy Rangers are the arch-rivals of the Poppy Rangers, along with Ranger Zhao. Despite the differences between the two groups, the Ivy Rangers are the egotistical, arrogant and inconsiderate counterparts of the Poppy Rangers. The Ivies have became the bullies of the Poppies ever since their childhood, and the Ivies had defeated the Poppies in the annual Peewee Ranger Games up to three times with their sheer kickball skills. In "Ranger Games," the Poppies prepare to defeat the Ivies for the fourth time in the Peewee Ranger Games, with the assistance of Tabes and more especially Grizz with his cheerleading, but one Ivy Ranger went as far as assaulting Wallace with a sliding tackle to prevent another score from the Poppies, prompting Grizz to substitute for Wallace.

In the end, the Ivies end up losing to the Poppies and Grizz at the final round, and the Poppies would later potentially go on to defeat the Ivies more times in the Peewee Ranger Games, eventually leading to the Ivies disqualified from the Peewee Ranger Games.

Trivia[]

  • The Poppy Rangers are the second major characters in the series to be kids, the first being Chloe Park.
  • The Poppy Rangers are the second notable characters in the series to work as a team, the first being the Bears, the titular main protagonists of said franchise.
  • The Poppy Rangers have never had an interaction with Panda Bear and Ice Bear, but would still show an affable and kindhearted disposition towards them nonetheless if the girls did interact with them.
  • Each Poppy Ranger is described in terms of personality by their own character portraits: Diaz is described as "curious and witty," both Parker and Nguyen are described as "quiet and confident," Murphy is described as "cheerful and patient," and Wallace is described as a "fearless and a born leader." However, there are several moments in We Bare Bears that cause the Poppy Rangers to not follow these respective and aforementioned personalities (Wallace is afraid of heights, and she and the other Poppy Rangers are afraid of thunderstorms and dark caves, etc).
  • The Poppy Rangers becoming insane from starvation and turning against Grizzly Bear in Lord of the Poppies is similar to how Panda and Ice Bear became primal and turned against each other and Grizz in the episode, Primal. Not only this, the episode, Lord of the Poppies, where the girls turn primal is a direct reference to the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, where a similar group of young children turn against each other while stranded on an island.
  • The Poppy Rangers referring Grizz as "Bear Guy" references the three bears' philanthropic perspective of the human race in the We Bare Bears series, despite them being anthropomorphic animals.
  • Interestingly, the Poppy Rangers share traits of personality and characteristics from each of the Bears: Wallace demonstrates leadership (Grizz), Nguyen and Murphy show high intelligence and hyperawareness (Ice Bear), and the rest of the girls are both paranoid and wrathful (Panda Bear). Additionally, the Poppy Rangers are even as young as the Baby Bears and/or Chloe Park.
  • The relationship between the Poppies and the Ivy Rangers strongly resembles the relationship between the Rowdyruff Boys and the Powerpuff Girls: the Ivies share the same traits from the Rowdyruff Boys (being juvenile, egotistical, spoiled and dimwitted), while the Poppies share the same traits from the Powerpuff Girls (being sweet, selfless, benevolent, intelligent, level-headed and polite).
  • In Lord of the Poppies, the Poppy Rangers arrive at the same island the Baby Bears ended up in the episode, The Island, and met up with Karla and Dave. In this instance, the Poppies and Grizz would have potentially encountered Dave as a recurring antagonist in the episode if it was not for him running out of resources upon Karla and the Baby Bears' escape from him and the island, but since he eventually ran out of resources while being stranded in the island, Dave likely died from starvation as the three bears grew up.
